Home Sweet Home

The summer is really flying by!  We were in Arkansas for three weeks.  I love being able to be with my family, and it was a treat to be able to stay with them during that time.  While we were there, we spoke at several churches and a kids camp.  From Arkansas, we went to Louisiana for a few services and then on to Florida.  We met my sister and her family and spent a few days at Disney with them.  They were so generous and paid Grace’s way.  While I had to be at a few meetings, they took her with them even more.  She was an honorary Willis for that week.  She had such a great time with her aunt, uncle and cousins.  She’s got quite a few stories from the week and does a great impression of her aunt on a roller coaster.  🙂

After we finished up with Disney, we went on to General Council, the national business meetings/convention of the Assemblies of God.  The meetings were good, and we were happy to be able to see some friends we haven’t seen in a while.  Friday morning, we left at 5:00 am to head back to Texas.  Without stops, it’s a 16-hour drive.  We’ve had a few long hauls this summer, so we have it down.  We drive a few hours and stop for meals and to stretch a little bit.  It took us 18 hours with stops.  It makes for a long day, but we like coming home to our own place.

We were so happy that we got even more time with my sister and her family at General Council.

Speaking of our own place, we bought a condo in late June.  We had a few things from the last time we lived in America, and we had a few pieces of furniture.  We had thrown everything into the place and left to go to Arkansas.  While we were gone, we asked my brother and sister-in-law to check our mail and look in on the place.  When we were in Florida, my sister-in-law, Angie, called and told me that they had put our beds together and asked if they could decorate Grace’s bathroom and make it more special for us.  She also told us that they had other pieces of furniture that we could use.

When we got home, we found out that they had done a little bit more.  They not only put our beds together, but they had bedding on them.  Things were put washed and put away.  We now have family pictures on the wall.  (Angie is a fantastic photographer and graphic designer!) My mom had sent a list of groceries for us to have, and they were in the refrigerator.  I had made out a grocery list, and literally everything they got for us was on my list.

Grace’s bathroom was decorated so cute in green and pink.  Angie had asked me what her favorite color was, and I had told them green.  She also asked if there was a design or motif that Grace liked.  I had told her that unicorns and mustaches were high on the list, but I doubted that they’d find anything for a bathroom with that.  I was right, but that didn’t stop them from putting those touches in her bedroom.  Her bedding is green, and there are such cute posters on the wall including mustaches and unicorns.  That first night, Grace was so excited about it all that she had a hard time getting to sleep.  She said that it was her dream room.  It was so nice of them to do everything in our house, but the fact that Grace could begin to feel settled in our own home in her own room meant so much to us.

We still have some things to get for the house.  We have a recliner but need a couch.  We need a washer and dryer and a few cabinets as well, but we’re definitely on our way to making our home more homey.  For us, home is a place that is comfortable and a place to relax, a place that we feel safe and can just be ourselves, a place that we can come to after traveling and rest.  In English, we say “home sweet home.”  In Dutch, they say, “oost, west, thuis best,” which means, “east, west, home is best.”  However you say it, it’s nice to finally be in our own home.
