Memory Lane

After one last week in Arkansas with my family (and having services), we hit the road again – this time for Louisiana.  We had services in Crowville and Lake Providence on Sunday.  So, we started out on Saturday after lunch.  Heading south brought back a lot of memories for me.  Part of the drive was what I used to take when going to college my first year.  I was so happy to see fields of soybeans.  Just looking at the farms brought made me remember so much of my childhood.  I told Grace that the area where I lived looked like that.  She said, “Really?!!!”  Somehow, I don’t think she’d want to live there.  I’m pretty sure that Mike wouldn’t either – especially since he told me so.

Since going through Monroe was on the way, we tried to make the trip even more special for Grace by going to Duck Commander in West Monroe.  She’s become a big fan of the show Duck Dynasty and was really hoping to see someone on the show.  We had told her that seeing someone on a Saturday afternoon near closing time wasn’t likely, so she wasn’t too disappointed when she didn’t see anyone.  Just being there made her “happy, happy, happy” though.”

After we left West Monroe, we headed over to my aunt and uncle’s house in Lake Providence to spend some time with them and stay the night there.  I started to get very excited and tell Grace many stories of my times in Lake Providence.  Many of my childhood memories come from being there.  She was pretty excited to see the lake where I learned to swim and the pier where my sister, Karen, and I pretended to be contestants in the Miss America pageant.  She thought that the cypress trees in the water were the coolest/prettiest thing though.  She said that if her Aunt Angie could be there, she would take a million pictures.  I think she’s right.  The lake at sunset is a thing of beauty!

We had a service Sunday morning in Crowville, Louisiana, where my mom grew up.  It was amazing to talk to people who know my family so well and had so many stories of my grandparents and aunts.  We cried together as I talked about godly heritage that my grandmother gave me. After church, we went to Johnny’s Pizza.  This was another childhood memory for me.  When I was a child, we rarely – if ever – ate out, and Johnny’s Pizza was a major treat for me.  I told Grace before we got there that it is the best pizza in the world.  Of course, it was hard to live up to such hype – especially since Grace has had pizza in Italy before.  It was good, but it tasted better to me because it brought back such good memories.

Having a service in Lake Providence, where my father was raised, was also memory-inspiring.  It was great to see some old friends and be with family a little more.  It’s not great to constantly have to say goodbye to people, but leaving some family meant we could be with other family.  Finally after two months of being in America, we were able to see my sister and her family.  Grace was so excited that she could be with her cousins; in fact, she was more excited about seeing them than she was about getting to go with them to Disney World.  I guess she’ll be making some memories of her own this week that she will some day be able to tell her children about.
